We call Anuradhapura a sacred city as it is the place Buddhism in Sri Lanka was originated with arrival of Bo Sapling by Arahant nun Sangihamitta about 2550 years ago. The sacred Bo Tree center of the Buddhist religion. Now it is a partly renovated to depict the splendor of past history of Sri Lanka. Anuradhapura is one of the World Heritage sites declared by UNESCO. Its picturesque ruins, declares the advance technology the Sri Lankans centuries ago. It was once a major center of Sri Lankan civilization. Anuradhapura ruins comprise of huge bell-shaped stupas built of small sun-dried bricks, temples, sculptures, palaces, and ancient drinking-water reservoirs, swimming pools and huge reservoirs (Tanks) to collect rain water for agriculture.
