Polonnaruwa was the thriving commercial and religious centre of Sri Lanka some 800 years ago. It consists of a lot of temples and religious buildings. For three centuries it was the royal capital, of both the Chola and Sinhalese kingdoms. In Polonnaruwa, it all started in the late 10th century when the South Indian Chola dynasty had conquered Sri Lanka.

Today Polonnaruwa is a huge city. It comprises of various types of stores, shops, institutions, banks, Schools big and small, Base hospitals, parks, Ancient city has remains of various of Royal palaces, Buddhist shrines.

Today lot of visitor journey about a distance of 228 kilometers from Colombo to reach this important city. Surround the city there are various water reservoirs. Most important of them all is Prakrama Samudraya. We call it Samudraya as it so large like that of an Ocean. The great King Prakrama made this water reservoir during his reign in which there were no equipment like today. It was made with human labour and ingenuity. Today reservoir water is used throughout the year for irrigation purposes.

The city can be reached from Kurunagala, Kandy, Batticoloa, Trincomalee, and Jaffna. It also can be reached by road, train and air as well. Visitors will find comfortable hotels here and they can easily reach other parts of the country
